I have had some down-time over Thanksgiving and decided to update my web page.  It was a shock to realize that other than some videos and a lot of shares of posts by others, I hadn’t posted anything personal since 2017.  I...

2017 Wind River Range Trek – Trail Lakes to Elkhart Park

On Monday, Aug. 14, 2017 our party of 5 departed Trail Lakes Trailhead outside of Dubois, WY for 8-days in the wilderness. We hiked 80 miles, visited many of the crown jewels of the “Winds”, and explored some of its most inaccessible places. Only 4 of the 8 days were spent on-trail, with the balance spent freelancing and route-finding through incredibly rugged and isolated stretches of wilderness where we went days without seeing another human being. We crossed four significant passes, reached 12,200 ft. above sea level twice, transited Knifepoint glacier at 11.500 ft., and crossed more streams, creeks, rivers, snow-fields, rock-fields and marshes than we can count. On our final day we witnessed the total solar eclipse from within the area of totality.

Escaping Los Angeles

I am not a worrier, not given to hear the call of catastrophe. In the middle of the night on Monday, amid the squeal of the wind, my husband got up to take down some chimes ringing through the dark. I laughed: What a ridiculous time to have wind chimes. The wind moaned, whimpered; doors shook. It made no sense that we lived here. We could barely afford this house, which was, in any case, a two-bedroom too small for a family of four. We had been entranced by the view of Silver Lake, and Atwater Village, and the mountains [...]

Trump Is Building a Bridge to 1896

For at least two decades now, social critics and commentators have been proclaiming that America is in a second Gilded Age. Like the similar fascism debate, the invocation of the late 19th century's summit of freebooting capitalism to characterize our own age of rampaging inequality obscures as much as it illuminates. Yet, here on the cusp of Donald Trump's second administration, at least one Gilded Age analogue is warranted: the presidency of William McKinley, which neatly distilled the outlook of the American ruling class in its self-assured prime. [...]

Tapped Out

I think of the fire hydrant as a quintessential bit of American iconography. Yes, they predate the United States, going back to the sixteenth century and the spread of piped municipal water systems in Europe and Asia. But, if you asked the average person to picture a fire hydrant, his imagination would conjure one in the American design - in part because elsewhere (Britain, Germany, Spain) the hydrants are below ground and no one knows their shape.
